Kendrick Lamar’s 2013 track ‘bi*ch Don’t Kill My Vibe’ was discussed in the trial of Oscar Pistorius today (April 10).
The Olympic athlete is accused of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of February 14, 2013. Pistorius says he killed Steenkamp by accident, mistaking her for an intruder. The prosecution says he intentionally killed her during an argument.
According to Associated Press, chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel referred to WhatsApp messages which revealed Pistorius and Steenkamp had argued about him playing Kendrick Lamar in his car.
A message from Steenkamp to Pistorius that was shown in court read: “I’m scared of you sometimes and how u snap at me and of how you will react to me. You make me happy 90% of the time and I think we are amazing together but I am not some other bi*ch you may know trying to kill your vibe.”
Pistorius’ replied: “I was upset that you just left me after we got food to go talk to a guy and I was standing right behind you watching you touch his arm and ignore me. And when I spoke up you introduced me which you could’ve done but when I left you just kept on chatting to him when clearly I was upset. I asked Martin to put on that Kendrick Lamar album in the car and don’t know it.”
He continued: “Granted that it was a sh*t song but you should’ve just lent forward and whispered in my ear to change it seeing as I had to drive to pick up your friend.”
Nel asked if the name of the song was ‘bi*ch, Don’t Kill My Vibe’, but Pistorius said he couldn’t remember the specific song. The prosecutor responded that Steenkamp would have been right to take offence, but “we can’t ask her”.
