Jill Scott, the R&B singer who had fervently defended Bill Cosby against rape allegations, has retracted her support after testimony from a 2005 civil suit came to light on Monday.
As claims against Cosby surfaced, some of his mentees became disgusted with his actions, while others defended him against attack. Jill Scott was part of the latter group. In December, Jill Scott defended herself on Twitter as others questioned her decision to support the man she called her mentor.
For her efforts, she (as well as Whoopi Goldberg) even received gratitude from Cosby himself.
However, testimony from a 2005 deposition reveals that Cosby admitted to giving drugs to women he wanted to have sex with. At one point, Cosby was asked by the woman’s attorney about his use of prescriptions for the pills, known as Quaaludes.
“When you got the Quaaludes, was it in your mind that you were going to use these Quaaludes for young women that you wanted to have sex with?” the lawyer asked.
“Yes,” Cosby said, according to the document, which was released after a request by The Associated Press. After this was revealed to the public, Jill Scott rescinded her previous support for Cosby on Twitter.
In the past few months, as more than two dozen women came forward to accuse Cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting them, Cosby has faced financial consequences (NBC pulled the plug on a new Bill Cosby show, Netflix postponed a comedy special, and TV land cancelled his reruns).
